Another reflection of our modern
culture can be heard in Peter Hyman's The Reluctant
Metrosexual . Light, bright, and easy on the
ears, this is a swift and entertaining listen that is much
better than the trendy title would lead you to believe.
This is a winsome account of Hyman's days of unemployment,
online dating, and a near miss at a law career. He writes
meaningfully of the loss of an important love and the reasons
he is often mistaken for being gay.
Occasionally, he tries too hard, but this is a solid
effort that calls to mind, more for subject than style, the essays of David Sedaris.
Hyman is a professional stand-up comedian; he knows how to play with words so
that his listeners will laugh out loud. He's not a polished pro one can hear
the occasional swallow or awkward pause but he has a genuinely funny manner that
makes him endearing from his opening volley.
